Income Tax Assistance

MSU VITA provides tax preparation services for clients who meet low-income requirements. To see if you qualify for our services, please view our general requirements here.

 

Important Dates

VITA Last Day of Service: April 10 2025

Tax Day is on Tuesday, April 15 2025

Notice: MSU VITA is unable to provide legal services related to taxpayers who are in controversy with the Internal Revenue Service and state of Michigan relating to tax matters. For those seeking aid regarding such matters please visit the MSU Tax Clinic for free legal consultation. 

Who Qualifies

General Requirements:

  • People who generally make $67,000 or less

  • Persons with disabilities; and

  • Wish to have help with your personal income taxes. (VITA only assists with the current year’s personal income taxes during the normal tax season, we assist with prior year's tax returns in the summer.)

How To Schedule An Appointment

You may schedule an appointment beginning January 16th, 2024 by calling 2-1-1 on your local mobile or landline phone, or toll free at 866-561-2500.

VITA tax sessions for the 2025 Tax Season are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tax sessions take place between 6pm - 9pm and run through April 10, and will be held at the MSU Union

 

Notice: Tax preparation allowed for only one client per scheduled session (i.e. a client may not bring in another individual’s income tax forms to be filled out as well). If you are late for your appointment, you may risk the chance of having to reschedule your appointment as there are only so many time slots and volunteers per session.

What To Bring

In addition to meeting our general requirements, please note that you must bring the following documents to your appointment:​​

  • Social Security cards for all members of the household - If you do not have your Social Security card, we can also accept form SSA-1099 if you receive Social Security benefits

  • Government-issued Photo ID

  • All applicable tax documentation
